Dr. Doug is Douglas A. Pinnow, Ph.D.
He graduated with distinction from Cornell University as a Bachelor of Engineering Physics. While serving as a Naval Officer and Nuclear Engineer on Admiral Rickover’s staff in Washington, DC, he continued his studies in physics at The Catholic University of America. There, he received a Ph.D. in physics as a NASA Fellow. Dr. Doug went on to become a Member of the Technical Staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey where he served as Supervisor of the Quantum Electronics Group in the Solid State Device Development Laboratory. While at Bell Labs, he made pioneering contributions to the emerging field of fiber optics
After eight years at Bell Labs, Dr. Doug moved to the West Coast where he became Assistant Manager of the Chemical-Physics Department at the Hughes Research Laboratory in Malibu, California.
Several years later, he returned to the East Coast to become Director of R&D at Times Fiber Communications in Wallingford, Connecticut where he participated in the Company’s successful initial public offering (IPO) of stock as well as a subsequent (secondary) offering. Four years later, he joined the Newport Corporation of Costa Mesa, California, as Vice President. Subsequently, he founded Universal Photonix in Laguna Hills, as its president, and also founded and served as Chief Technical Officer of a subsidiary, Electronic Monitoring Systems.
While working at the Hughes Research Laboratory, he also served as an adjunct professor at UCLA in the School of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics.
Dr. Doug has been engaged in business and technology consulting since he retired from Electronic Monitoring Systems after his company was sold in 2003. Subsequently, he passed the U.S. patent bar exam to become a registered patent practitioner both to assist others and to develop and protect his own inventions. His recent inventive efforts are in the fields of optics and photonics, nuclear energy, and precious metal authentication.
He has published more than fifty technical papers, two books, and has received dozens of patents. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America.
In his free time, Dr. Doug enjoys ocean sailing and racing. He has participated in the annual Newport-to-Ensenada race for many years. He and his wife Joan have served as foster parents, often for premature babies with special problems such as prenatal drug exposure.
